CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Stop!” I called down to the basement before I descended the stairs at a neck-breaking pace. Don’t worry. I held the rail.

At the bottom was Corridan’s body. His throat had been cut, and his body pierced with the many stars he’d tried to kill me with. He’d probably tried to kill Aisling with him as well.

Looking the dead man over, I had to admit, I didn’t think Aisling had it in her.

In horror films, faces were often caught in a petrified state, but in reality, only medusa could freeze a face in terror. Instead of twisted horror, Corridan’s face was slack with rest. The only thing that gave off the sense that he’d feared for his life was the stench that told me he’d lost the fight with his bladder.

I covered my nose and skipped over the body.

The second thing I noticed about the basement was the improvement to the air quality. Away from Corridan’s body, my lungs no longer felt suffocated by magic. My limbs were no longer weighed down by the curse Titania had placed over the space. The spell had been broken.

The basement was a large space packed with antiques, cages, and even a few medieval torture devices. I had a feeling the guillotine had been brought over by Vlad himself.

Vlad had “villain from a cheesy movie” written all over him. During my first encounter with the man, he did that thing villains always do where they lock up the protagonist and then tell them their plan in novel-length details.

I could see him rubbing his hands together and chuckling as his victim screamed for the mercy that would never come.

Around an old Japanese room divider, I found them.

Aisling had Lilac and Sirius tied to a chair. Lilac’s hands were spread on her thighs, which kept her from using her trick.

Sirius noticed me first, and he unfurrowed his brow. He was wet from sweat. His red hair looked brown as it clung to his forehead and face. He looked at me like I was bringing succor, like I’d come to alleviate his pain, to rescue him. His eyes cleared like a summer sky after a storm.

The expression tripped me up. I didn’t understand why he thought I’d save him after what he’d done.

Then Aisling lifted a blade, and I didn’t know where it was going. I didn’t even know if she planned to use it violently, though I didn’t see any turkeys for carving in the vicinity. I don’t know how to explain why I did what I did next, but I did it.

I flung her hand back with my power and watched it smack into a nearby mahogany column. The blade dropped. My aim was getting better. I specifically only aimed for her hand, and I got it on the first try. Go me!

“Ow!” She winced and shook her hand. “Lorena, whatever would lead you to make such an offense to me?”

I’d almost forgotten how uppity the chick could sound when she talked.

Strangely, I loved her outfit.
